Prologue

Although the cave in Duskwood was enormous, Xarugos needed to bend down, to walk inside. The blue male could have easily taken up the form and size of one of the mortal races, but he found that incredibly humiliating.
Why would a proud dragon change into a rat? Just because rumour has it, that the "wise and respectable" Korialstrasz does so? Xarugos would more likely just draw in. The chalk would not bruise his hard scales...
Why had they foisted him with a petty job, like this one? How could the elders not see, that he was destined for greater purposes? Azeroth still crawled with demons. And why had he to do it now? He had almost won over that female. Why he had to guard junk that wasn't touched by anyone for thousands of years?!

The orb of Khirdoch, that the elders thought to contain great magical power, was an ancient artifact. According to the legend, it was created by an eredar warlock in the time of the War of the Ancients from a strange material that can only be found in Draenor. The demon had wanted to use the orb against the defenders of Azeroth to gain more power from his leaders, but a tauren learnt of his plans and fought him. The bull had managed to shatter the stone into pieces, but they both found their death in the battle.
Long after the war the artifact had been found by the blue dragonflight. The orb beared with magical power even when it wasn’t intact. The leviathans tried to gather the lost pieces again so they could put the orb into safety, but even after thousands of years some shards were missing. They had been hiding the remnants of the orb in that cave checking if everything was all right with it time to time, and that day was Xarugos’ turn.

What a boring day! the reptile thought. Who on Azeroth would want to steal an over ten thousand years old marble? It has never been touched so far... Maybe the mortals have forgotten it ever existed.
He stepped into a smaller chamber at the end of the narrow passage. For this, he had to shrink himself slightly, but he would not alter his looks.
A strange blue light illuminated the room, the source of it were dragon scales attached to the wall. This ancient magic was merely used to make the objects inside visible.
Xarugos bent down to open a small chest on the ground, and he had to find out that on that incredibly boring day when he had to complete such a boring task, the day, when he could have been fighting demons instead, the day when he had almost found joy in that blue female, that day... the orb of Khirdoch was not in its place.
So.. finally gathered the courage to upload this thing. I hope you enjoy, and also constructive criticism is appreaciated.

(Note: despite the prologue this is not a dragon story.)

IMPORTANT!
Story takes place between Frozen Throne and WoW.
Beta-read by a very nice night elf player, Kyss. (Should you be reading this, I'm still counting on you with the rest of the story, if you are interested. :) )

Interesting read so far :)

I would change the ending though. It is an extremely long sentence and is difficult to read.
The ending is good, since it's serves like a cliff hanger, wanting you to read more. But I would build it a little different.
Now, being free is one of the joys in life, so I am going to go ahead and word it like I would do it

Xarugos kneeled before the small chest that was in front of him on the ground. What he thought was going to be a extremely boring day since he could have been fighting demons instead, he reached for the chest to open it. For a moment the glimpse of the beautiful blue dragon flashed before his eyes and he sighed loudly. This day would have been boring if not for the fact that the orb of Khirdoch was not there when he opened the chest...

Something a long those lines :rose:
